Boost Your Immune System – It really does matter!
You need to boost your immune system at this time of year, especially if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, because the next few months are when you are most likely to catch a cold and flu.
Getting colds and similar illnesses can put you in bed for several days, and you could easily miss out on important occasions and events, or have to skip a week of work. They can be very disruptive, and you’ll most likely feel awful and spend days wondering when you’re going to feel better and what you can do to help yourself recover.
But sadly, once you’ve caught it, it’s hard to get rid of.
The best answer is prevention!
But how do you do that?
You inevitably find yourself in close proximity to someone with a cold or similar. Whenever you’re in a crowd, you’re exposed to other people’s germs. And unless you want to lock yourself in and never see anyone, that’s just the way it is.
So if you can’t avoid the germs, how can you prevent infection?
The answer is surprisingly simply, and has been know to most people for a long time.

Take plenty of Vitamin C
The best way to get vitamin C is from fruit and vegetable, so eat plenty.
If you find that a struggle, drink a small glass of fruit juice every day (orange juice is great),
If there is no other way, take a supplement.
Quit smoking and drinking alcohol
If you smoke regularly, you should cut down on the number of cigarettes, or better still, quit.
If you drink regularly, limit the amount of alcohol you consume to a few units per week.
You should try to quit smoking completely, but you don’t have to cut alcohol out of your diet completely. However, it’s important to recognize that these things will have a negative effect on your health, both in the short term and long term.
It can be difficult to fit exercise into a busy routine, but there are lots of little tricks that can help.
Take the stairs rather than the elevator (at least for part of the way), walk the long way round, park further from work / home.
If the choice is getting up and doing it yourself or getting someone else to, do it get up!
Exercise, even if it’s a lot of gentle exercise, can really help to boost your immune system.
There are also other huge benefits, such as a healthier heart and weight and just as importantly, you’ll feel better.
Eat plenty of vegetables
Improving your diet can really help in the battle against common illnesses.
A balanced diet is important, and where possible, try to eat fresh, unprocessed food.
Vegetables and herbs such as broccoli, carrots and garlic are great at improving your overall health and they also boost your immune system to help prevent illnesses taking hold.
Vitamin D also helps Boost Your Immune System
Vitamin D is important too. In the summer time, most of us get enough Vitamin D from the sun, but in the winter, particularly if you live somewhere where there is not much winter sun, you may need a boost. Good source of Vitamin D include cheese, egg yolks and meat such as beef liver and fish.
Personally, I prefer the natural approach, but if you need to, you can always take a supplement. It’s better than not getting enough!!
